About Dr. Abdeen
Dr. Ayesha Abdeen, MD is a board certified orthopedic surgeon in Boston, Massachusetts. She is currently licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts. She is affiliated with Boston Children's Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham Campus.
Dr. Ayesha Abdeen is the interim Chief of the Division of Joint Replacement Surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). She is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Abdeen is also the Director of Quality Assurance for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at BIDMC where she is dedicated to patient safety and the continual monitoring of surgical outcomes. In this role, she implements methodologies to optimize the quality of care delivered to her own patients and in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as a whole. Additionally, Dr. Abdeen is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School where she instructs residents and medical students on the clinical practice of orthopaedic surgery.

• Hip arthritis (osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis)
• Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis)
• Post-traumatic arthritis of the hip and knee (due to fractures or injury of the hip or knee)
• Hip Dysplasia
• Osteonecrosis/Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip or knee
• Painful or Failed prior total hip and knee joint replacement (due to prosthetic wear, loosening, fracture, stiffness, infection)
• Hip Fractures
Research Focus and Awards:
Dr. Abdeen’s research interests include improved clinical outcomes in total hip and knee replacement surgery. She has collaborated with the Department of Anesthesia to establish protocols to minimize pain following joint replacement surgery. Her current research investigates alternate modalities for the reduction or post-surgical pain such as regional anesthesia and techniques in complementary medicine. She serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Arthroplasty.
Professional Accomplishments:
Dr. Abdeen has published research articles in numerous peer-reviewed orthopaedic surgery journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and the Journal of Arthroplasty. She has presented at multiple national and international meetings including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) and the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). She was selected for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Physician Leadership Program in 2015.
About Dr. Abdeen:
Dr. Abdeen was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada. She and her husband are raising their three young children in the Boston area. In addition to enjoying her time with her family, she also has special interests in yoga, golf, and running.
